CHAPTER 17

“Seriously, Donal, I am a grown woman, quite capable of taking care of myself.” Fiona crossed her arms and glared at him once they were back inside. He’d been trying to make her understand his point for ten minutes now.

“You don’t understand, Fi. Old Weatherby warned me not just of his greed and untrustworthiness, the man is a menace! Especially to women! Weatherby was very specific and I donnae wish to go into great detail as the letter did, but let me be clear, there is a reason Reginald was sent to the wilds of Scotland!”

Fiona snorted. “What, did he knock up the maid? Get caught in flagrante delicto with the neighbor’s wife? Is it worse than that? Was he found guilty of beating someone to death with his tiny little man hands?” She tossed her hair and put her hands on her waist, giving him a defiant look.

Donal approached her, moving into her personal space. “I donnae know what all your fancy words are, but if you mean leaving the maid with a babe, an’ havin’ an affair with the neighbor’s wife, yes, to the first and the second was his brother’s wife, and no he wasn’t found guilty of beating anyone, because they got him out of London before charges could be brought against him! And it wasn’t with his hands, it was with a bloody cane!”

“Well, still, that has no effect on me, I’m not likely to get involved with the man in a romantic entanglement, Donal! Not when my heart is engaged elsewhere!” Fiona shouted in his face.

Donal stepped back, looking as though she’d struck him with her words. “It’s what?”

“You heard me!” Fiona fumed, turning her back on him.

“Who?” he asked softly, his fingers closing over her bicep and turning her to him.

“You, you daft Highlander!” She flung her hands up at him in exasperation.

At her words, Donal pulled her to him and plunged his lips down on hers in an explosive kiss. Fiona threw her arms around his neck, kissing him back, her fingers entangling in his long blond hair. She pulled herself up his massive chest and wrapped her legs as best she could in the damn dress she was wearing, around his waist. She felt Donal slide his hands down to grip her bottom and pull her up to him. Straightening, he slammed her back into the wall, still kissing her. Fiona opened her mouth allowing him access as their tongues tangled, fighting for dominance.

After a few minutes they came up for air, breathing hard. Donal pressed his forehead to hers and nipped little kisses across her lips and along her jaw. “I’m just trying to keep you safe, Fi. He’s not a good man,” he said softly.

Fiona smiled. “I know. Thank you,” she whispered back.

He kissed her again quickly and then let her set her feet back down. “You’re welcome.”

Fiona blushed feeling unsettled. “Um, I should…go…I um, have some…stuff to finish,” she stuttered.

Donal smirked. “I like you flustered, Fi.”

“Shut up.” Fiona grinned, lifted up on her toes and kissed the corner of his mouth, then fled his study.
